Hearing aids can include a variety of features. Some of the features are standard and you will find them in most hearing aid models. Other features could be considered as optional extras, which you may or may not have.

Some may be available in only some of the types of hearing aid style, but others can be selected for all hearing aids. When you are choosing your hearing aids, you need to consider carefully what features you would like. Your audiologist will help you understand your options and choose the features that are best for your needs.

Some of the best hearing aid features include:

Directional Microphones

Directional microphones can now be found in most hearing aids; however, not all of them have them. Some hearing aids have just one directional microphone, but others can have several of them. Directional microphones are brilliant if you want to make it easier to hear in noisy environments. They are particularly great at helping you to hear speech through the noise. They help by amplifying sound that is coming from one direction and then quieting sound coming from other directions.

Multiple Settings

Hearing aids that have multiple settings to use several programs are brilliant if you want to minimize the time spent adjusting your settings. With preset programs saved to your hearing aids, you can choose the program that works best for the environment you are in and the activity you are doing. Some hearing aids can even detect what type of environment you are in and automatically switch the program.

Telecoil

The majority of hearing aids will have a telecoil, although some smaller styles won’t. A telecoil enables you to tune into a specific frequency directly. This means you can receive sound without background noise or feedback. Telecoil loops can be seen in most public places such as banks, stores, theaters, churches, and more. You are also able to use a telecoil to hear clearer when speaking to someone on the phone.

Bluetooth

Another way you can tune in directly to something you want to hear is through Bluetooth. You probably already have several Bluetooth-compatible devices, such as a smartphone, smartwatch, speaker, tablet, or computer. When you have hearing aids with Bluetooth, you can watch the TV, listen to music, and speak on the phone with a clearer sound.

Tinnitus Masking

If you have tinnitus with your hearing loss, you may want to consider hearing aids to provide you with tinnitus relief. Tinnitus masking is used to help suppress or disguise the tinnitus sounds you hear. It can be a good way to help you deal with tinnitus during the day and can work alongside more comprehensive tinnitus therapy programs.

There is a wide range of hearing aid features to choose from, and your audiologist will be able to help you and give you advice on which features will benefit you the most. If you think you may have hearing loss or want to explore more about hearing aid features, make sure you speak to your audiologist.
